Background
I grew up in South Africa and did my undergraduate and Masters degree at the University of the Witwatersrand and then spent several years working in the environmental and mineral exploration industries as a researcher in remote sensing. I then returned to academia and completed a PhD at the University of Portsmouth in the UK. This was followed by postdocs at the Universities of Cambridge, Chicago and a longer term position at the University of Oxford. In December 2011, I started as a lecturer at the University of Canterbury.
