Background

Achim Weiss is a senior scientist at the Max-Planck-Institute of Astrophysics (Garching, Germany) and a lecturer at the University of Munich, from which he received his PhD in 1987. His thesis concerned modeling of R Coronae Borealis stars, which is also of research interest here at the University of Canterbury. His post-doc time was spent at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, working on Supernova 1987A and nuclear astrophysics.

Achim is investigating many aspects of stellar structure and evolution, from using them as laboratories of fundamental physics to providing input for population synthesis models for galaxies. His main interest lies with low-mass stars, such as the Sun or those found in globular clusters and the galactic halo.
